Genre: Comedy
Directors: Nick Park
Year of Release: 1993
Length of Film: 30 Minutes
Character Types:
The Penguin
The Penguin uses a lack of dialogue but still manages to be an intimidating presence towards Wallace and Gromit.
Wallace
He is a vulnerable character whose naiveite leads to his weaknesses.
Gromit
He is a character who understands the danger but struggles to communicate what is really going on towards Wallace.
Narrative:
It uses a linear narrative and a Binary Opposition between Wallace and Gromit VS. The Penguin. At the start, a Binary Opposition is also formed between Wallace VS. Gromit and Gromit VS. The Penguin. In the end, all Binary Oppositions are resolved as The Penguin is locked away and Wallace and Gromit overcome their differences.
Key Elements:
Cinematography
It uses low-angle shots to position The Penguin as an ominous threat to Wallace and Gromit.
It uses CU's and ECU's to symbolize danger and to build tension within the film.
Sound
It creates a contrast in music to reflect the Binary Opposition between the antagonist and the protagonists.
The Penguin is represented through the use of ominous music to represent the idea of him being a dangerous character.
The Penguin uses little dialogue to create the idea of mystery behind the character.
Mise-En-Scene
It uses a Low-Key-Lighting to represent danger and contrasts characters into dark. This is evident when The Penguin is restricted to a shadow behind the curtain and is seen a large and foreboding.
What will i take from this film?
I will take how the antagonist uses little dialogue to create mystery behind them and Low-Key-Lighting is used to represnt the ominous danger around the antagonist. I can also take the Film-Noir style of this film as well
