Analysis of LOTR:The Ring Wraith Sequence

The Ring Wraith sequence from The Fellowship of the Ring begins with an establishing shot ,framed in a very long shot, of the main characters huddled together next to a large tree. As the Hobbits are near the bottom of the frame, it shows the perspective of the Hobbits next to the large tree which makes them look even smaller and vulnerable. They are shown in a small section of the screen which extends the feeling of entrapment. The sequence also begins with no music which makes the audience feel tense or fearful for the hobbits.

The shot continues with the camera tilting upwards revealing a low angle shot of the antagonist- the Ring Wraith. The upwards tilt makes the Ring Wraith intimidating and powerful. As it tilts upwards, the hobbits are pushed even further towards to the bottom of the screen which increases the feeling of entrapment. The costume colours also aid the viewer as the villain- the Ring Wraith- is dressed in black and resembles death whereas the heroes - the Hobbits- are dressed in green and brown which resembles nature.

The scene then transitions to a close up frame of Frodo's face which is also a low angle shot. It focuses on Frodo's expression as the background of the frame is dark which causes the audience to empathise with Frodo. The scene then changes to an extreme close-up of Frodo's face which is only showing his eyes- the rest of the screen is blank space and grass. His eyes are placed in the centre of the screen which intensifies the feeling of entrapment. It is also a high angle shot so it makes Frodo seem weak and small.
