The Wrong Trousers was a Aardman Studios in 1993. The film is directed by Nick Park and Produced by Christopher Moll. The film had a budget of £650,000 with a running time of 30 minutes. The film uses Aardmans signature stop motion animation. This was the first film where Aardman really began to create there brand through The Wrong Trousers where it was refined from the previous Wallace and Gromit film The Wrong Trousers.
The Wrong Trousers uses many different genres throughout the film. One of the key Genre that it show is a Crime film. This is shown through using the Penguin which is a easy villain archetype that is shown through the dark colours used on the character with the silence suggesting to the audience that he has something to hide. The film is based around the theft of a diamond which is convention of the crime film as a robbery. The film also uses mise-en-scene such as the revolver which is a convention of the crime genre using weaponry. However, one way that it doesn't really conform to the conventions of a crime genre is using the protagonist as someone who is against the crime that is happening. The film also uses shots where the movie uses a focal-shift to show the antagonist which creates a feeling that he is up to something sinister. The focal shift moves from the passive character of Wallace who was laying in bed to the active character of the penguin.
Some narrative devices that the film uses Todorov's 5 act structure. This is because the film starts off normally with Wallace and Gromit sat at the table which is the equilibrium. There is then a disruption of the penguin coming in because they do not have enough money to sustain themselves. They then recognize the disruption with the Penguin kidnapping Wallace. Gromit then tries to stop the penguin from stealing the diamond when the penguin is caught and put into jail with a return to equilibrium but with the slight difference that they can now pay their bills.
The representation of Britishness is shown through the mise-en-scene of the film. This is shown through examples of the start of the film with the breakfast scene. This is because it is shown as being a very British situation with tea and typical British wallpaper. British people are represented as being very stereotypical English.
