The Neo-Western genre is a small genre combining a newer feeling aesthetic with the old western genre. This is shown in films such as "True Grit", "The Hateful Eight", "The Homesman" and many more. The Neo-Western genre was first seen in 1925 with a film called "Go West". The most recent Neo-western film when creating this is Scorched earth which has.
Some key elements of the Neo-western genre is the camera shots that are shown. In this genre they use a lot of medium and long shots to show how a characters is often a "lone-wolf" and feels isolated away from the rest of society as well as medium shots to show and emotion that a character is displaying or a lack of.
The mise-en-scene of the Neo-western genre is often quite bare with the variety of costumes that is shown in it. The setting that the genre is in can be small variety of things. The main locations that the films are located in is rural towns or cities with the countryside such as a forest or desert. The time set varies between set in old western times which conforms more to the western genre or in modern times. The films are rarely if ever set in the future or an alternative universe. The sound of the genre usually consists of little music with a lot of emphasised sounds such as gunshots or grunting after being shot. Normally other sounds of the genre can also be emphasised such as petrol in a petrol being carried with water sounds. The editing of the genre is often very quick paced in the action scene but still containing longer shots of characters walking or getting into cars in the non-action scenes.
I personally find this style of aesthetic interesting as it is able create emotion scene in ways that the audience is able to relate to such as in cities or in familiar places while also creating a world around it that keeps the audience engaged with action taken from the western genre such as 1-on-1 shootouts.
